Basically Department of Ukrainian language connected with Department of Philosophy and Ukrainoznavstvo. It was founded in 1991 and headed by PhD, as.prof. M.Kubayewski.

The Department of Ukrainian language (Ukrainoznavstvo) ​​was founded in June 2011. It was headed by MD, PhD, prof. A.Pryshlyak.

The Department of Ukrainian Language was based on the Department of Ukrainian Studies by the order of rector of SHEE “I. Ya. Horbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University”. By the decision of Academic Council of University on August 31, 2015 the Department of Ukrainian Studies was renamed as Department of Ukrainian Language.

In 1994-1995 year of study the Department began teaching of course “Business Ukrainian Language”. In the period from 1998 till 2015 Ukrainian Language was taught at the Department of Ukrainian and Foreign Languages, later at the Department of Philosophy and Ukrainian Studies, after that at the Department of Philosophy, Social Sciences and History of Medicine; Foreign Languages and Social Sciences; Informatics, Foreign Languages and Social Sciences; Philosophy, Social Sciences and Foreign Languages; Philosophy and Ukrainian Studies; Ukrainian Studies.

Today the staff of the department contains 7 candidates of Philological Sciences, 4 candidates of Pedagogical Sciences, among them – 7 asossiate professors, 2 seniour instructor, 2 instructors. There are 3 seniour lab assistants that have higher pedagogic education.

At the departments for students of Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Scietific Research Institute of Nursing are teaching such subjects as “Professional Ukrainian Language” for I course Ukrainian students, and “Ukrainian Language as Foreign” for I and II course foreign students.
